Mahatma in Movies

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, more popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, is undoubtedly one of the most eminent freedom fighters any Indian will recognize with. From early days every child must have acquainted himself with this political figure through the curriculum history textbooks that has liberal footage of Gandhiji.

The father of the nation has also had a strong association with the movie world. From textual depiction in curriculum chapters to the live portrayal on the Bollywood big screen, Gandhiji has been a source of inspiration for many filmmakers not just in India but also across the globe.

It would be as good to say that any movie on the Indian independence theme or any biography on a real life historical character around the independence era is incomplete without the mention of Gandhiji. So integral was Mahatma Gandhi to Indian independence and thereby to the films on related themes!

Today on Independence Day, Gaurav Malani takes you to a trip articulating all those Bollywood actors who portrayed the character of Gandhiji on the silver screen over the years.

MOVIE REVIEW-DHOKHA

Powerful. Thought-provoking. Disturbing. That sums up DHOKHA, directed by Pooja Bhatt.
After attempting PAAP and HOLIDAY, Pooja charters into a new -- and most difficult -- terrain with DHOKHA. With terrorism raising its ugly head in Hyderabad recently, a film like DHOKHA is all the more topical. In this case, the suicide bomber is the cop's wife. Whew, piping hot stuff indeed!
What sets DHOKHA apart from films of its ilk is that the film never takes sides. It doesn't blame any particular community, in fact it's not pro or anti any religion. It blames the people who spread terror in the name of religion. Also, it denounces terrorism in very clear words. DHOKHA hits where it hurts. You want to know the reason why people turn into jehadis. DHOKHA probes into the issue and provides the answers.
To sum up, DHOKHA is one of the finest and powerful films to come out of the Bhatt camp. This one dares to unruffle a few feathers!
Zaid [Muzamil Ibrahim] is a Muslim police officer in Mumbai. On the night of a deadly bombing at the New Century Club, he works tirelessly to help the shocked and shattered patients brought to the hospital. But this night of turmoil and death takes a horrifying personal turn. His wife's body, the beautiful Sara [Tulip Joshi], is found amongst the dead. Things turn even more horrific when the police coldly announce that Sara's injuries were typical of those found on fundamentalist suicide bombers.
As evidence mounts that his wife, Sara, was responsible for the catastrophic bombing, Zaid is torn between cherished memories of their years together and the inescapable realization that the beautiful woman he loved had a life far removed from their comfortable existence together. DHOKHA is two creative minds at their best -- director Pooja Bhatt and writer Shagufta Rafique. Sure, a film like this is not everyone's idea of entertainment, but let's get real. Cinema isn't only entertainment, but enlightenment. With terrorism raising its ugly head time and again, in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, New York and London, you cannot shut your eyes to all that's happening around us.
DHOKHA tells the story well. The director and her competent writer open the cards at the very outset, within 10 minutes of the start. But it's the second hour that's a complete eye-opener. The ugly past, narrated by Anupam Kher, shakes you completely. Brilliantly penned and executed, you're stunned by the atrocities committed by the men in uniform.
The writing wobbles at times. Take the end, for instance. Ashutosh Rana getting caught for his misdeeds looks too sudden. Prior to that, the confrontation between Munish Makhija and Muzamil, although interesting, is long-drawn and tends to get preachy. However, the climax at a Mumbai Railway Station -- the culmination to the horrific tale -- is spell- binding.

UDIT NARAYAN'S BHOJPURI FILM

Udit Narayan’s first film as a producer Kab Hoi Gawna Hamar has been selected as the Best Feature Film in Bhojpuri at the National Film Awards this year. Conceptualized and written by Deepa Narayan Jha this film was directed by Anand D Ghatraj.
This will be the first Bhojpuri film to be honored by National Film Awards. Kab Hoi Gawna Hamar was released in 2005 and stars Ravi Kishan, Divya Desai and Kunal Singh. While extremely happy about the film, singer and now producer Udit Narayan said, “It feels great and it’s certainly an honor for Bhojpuri film industry that a Bhojpuri film has got privileged by National Award. It’s like a dream come true for me.”
Ravi Kishan who played the lead role in the movie says, “This is for the first time that any Bhojpuri film has got a National award. I promised the industry earlier to get a National award anyhow. Whether it’s for me or for my films it is as good as I am getting the award. In the last 45 years, this will be the first film to receive this honor.”
Udit Narayan was quite apprehensive about venturing into film business. He gives all the credit to his wife Deepa Narayan, who motivated him to come up with a Film production house called UD Movie. “I was motivated to make films by my wife Deepaji as she wanted to do something for the Indians who are staying in Mauritius. We feel people staying abroad have maintained Indian values and are close to Indian culture. I was quite apprehensive about it as I know it’s a tough job. The film was released in the year 2005. This was the first Bhojpuri film to be shot abroad” he adds.

THE BATTLE IS WON, NOT THE WAR !

After the verdict on the 1993 bomb blasts case, actor Sanjay Dutt was found guilty and recently sentenced to a six year rigorous imprisonment term. But from what we have learnt from sources close to the actor, his bail plea has been accepted. “After spending twenty days in custody Sanjay Dutt has managed to get bail and should be out by tomorrow”, says a source.
Dutt has been released on bail by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan till the TADA court in Mumbai provides the latter with a copy of the judgment. After getting the copy of the judgment, Sanjay will have to surrender. Dutt will also have to appear once in a week before the nearest local police station. And, after getting the copy of the judgment, Dutt can apply for regular bail.
IndiaFM checked with Sanjay Dutt’s lawyer Satish Manshinde who confirmed the news saying, "Yes, he has got the bail”. Ask him anymore on the terms and conditions of the bail and he is quick to comment, “Let him come out first then we can discuss everything. You're naming a child before he is born."
However sources add that his passport has been seized and Sanju won’t be allowed to leave the country until further notice.
Dutt was sentenced and imprisoned on 31st July and soon after the verdict he was sent to Arthur Road jail. Authorities then decided to move Sanjay from Arthur to Yerawada jail in Pune after few days. But if sources are to be believed, this would be Sanjay Dutt’s last night in Pune’s prison.
